Common Issues with Goods Received Not Invoiced (GRNI) Accounts

Are you seeing odd balances in your goods received not invoiced (GRNI) account?

Keeping accounting system controls loose at the beginning can feel practical.

They’ll tell you, “We’ll get the process moving now and tighten it up later.”

That sounds reasonable - until later arrives.

One common place this shows up is in GRNI/inventory received not billed. If you’re seeing negative balances, stale balances, or activity that doesn’t make sense, it may be a sign that purchasing, receiving, and vendor billing aren't aligning cleanly.

Sometimes the issue is timing. Sometimes it’s price or quantity variance. Sometimes bills are entered before receipts. And sometimes the underlying control process simply was not configured tightly enough during implementation.

Three-way matching can help, but only if the process is designed correctly and the team understands what to do when exceptions happen.

If your business depends on accurate inventory, purchasing, and AP controls, this is not something to ignore until audit time or month-end close.

Happy to trade notes if you’re dealing with this.
